Ken Smith Kissimmee Teacher and Advocate Died At 79

Ken Smith was best known as one of the three people of the modern time who chaired as both Kissimmee mayor and Osceola County Commission chairman. The other two mayors were Jim Swan and Frank Attkisson. Ken’s death news came a few weeks after Jim Swan’s death. While the third one, Fran Attkisson died in 2017 in a motorcycle accident.

After Ken’s death, the executive director of the Education Foundation, Kerry Avery said, “He was an amazing man, a mentor and a friend to everybody I know,”

“I got to know him for 20 years. He was a humble public official, and always had time to talk to people, children and adults alike. He was a man of integrity, and one of the most amazing people I’d ever met.”

Ken Smith spent his childhood in Orange County and later he started working as a teacher there. From 1965 to 1978 he worked as the administrator at Osceola High School. Later he started working as a real estate agent. In 1993 he started back working as a teacher at Poinciana High School.

Kerry also said, “He was a wealth of knowledge about Osceola County government when I ran for office, then when I got elected, he became a great advocate for law enforcement, he was the epitome of a community servant, and made our community a stronger place. It’s a true loss for us.”
